How Is Ugandan Coffee Used Across India's Coffee Market?

India's coffee culture spans traditional filter kaapi, the 3,500-strong specialty cafe scene, and a massive instant coffee industry. Uganda supplies beans across all three segments.

Filter Kaapi Blends

Traditional South Indian filter coffee demands a specific profile: strong body, low acidity, rich mouthfeel. Ugandan Robusta Screen 15 and 18 add the body and crema that filter kaapi requires, blending with Indian Arabica and chicory to produce the iconic cup served in dabarahs across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh.

Specialty Cafe Supply

India opened over 600 new specialty cafes in 2025 alone. These cafes need single-origin Arabica with distinctive cup profiles for pour-over, espresso, and cold brew menus. Bugisu AA and Ntanda 31 offer the bright acidity and fruit complexity that Indian specialty consumers are discovering through brands like Blue Tokai, Third Wave Coffee, and Starbucks India.

Instant Coffee Production

India is the world's 6th largest coffee producer and a significant instant coffee manufacturer for domestic consumption and export. Ugandan Robusta, with its high caffeine content and clean cup profile, is a preferred input for instant coffee production. Consistent quality across containers makes Uganda Robusta a reliable supply chain partner for Indian manufacturers.

India Import FAQ

What is the import duty on Uganda coffee entering India?
Import duty on green coffee beans into India varies by classification and trade agreements — typically 10-45%. Contact your customs broker to confirm the current tariff schedule. Nonda provides all required origin documentation (UCDA certificate, phytosanitary, fumigation, bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list) for Indian customs clearance.
How fast is shipping from Uganda to Indian ports?
Coffee ships from Mombasa to Indian ports (Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Chennai, Kochi) in 2-3 weeks via the Indian Ocean route. This is the shortest transit time of any of Uganda's major export destinations, giving Indian importers faster inventory turnover than European or American buyers.
Can Uganda coffee compete with Indian domestic Arabica production?
Ugandan and Indian Arabica are complementary, not competitive. India produces ~350,000 MT annually and still imports green coffee to meet domestic demand (especially for espresso blends requiring specific profiles). Uganda Bugisu AA offers a brighter cup than Indian Arabica at a competitive price point. Many Indian roasters blend the two origins for complexity and value. See our full Arabica supplier page for grade specifications.
