Robusta Coffee Beans: What Makes Uganda Different

Robusta coffee beans (Coffea canephora) are the stronger, higher-caffeine coffee species used in espresso blends, instant coffee and cold brew. Uganda is the only major origin where robusta is indigenous: wild robusta still grows in Uganda's natural forests, and commercial lots are cultivated at 900 to 1,500 meters, far higher than most Vietnamese or Brazilian robusta. The result is a cleaner cup with deeper body, less harshness and more crema. In May 2025 Uganda overtook Ethiopia to become Africa's largest coffee exporter, and robusta makes up around 80 percent of that volume (UCDA).

Robusta Harvest Calendar in Uganda

Main Crop: November to February

Central region and Lake Victoria basin. The bulk of Screen 18 and 15 export lots come from this harvest, with fresh arrivals shipping from December.

Fly Crop: May to August

Second harvest across Busoga, West Nile and the Rwenzori foothills. Keeps fresh-crop robusta available year round, a supply advantage single-harvest origins cannot match.

What are robusta coffee beans?

Robusta coffee beans come from Coffea canephora, one of the two commercially traded coffee species. Robusta carries roughly twice the caffeine of arabica (2.2 to 2.7 percent vs 1.2 to 1.5 percent), more body, and higher extract yield, which is why espresso blenders and instant coffee manufacturers depend on it.

Why is Ugandan robusta better than Vietnamese robusta?

Altitude and genetics. Ugandan robusta grows at 900 to 1,500 meters, well above most Vietnamese plantations, producing denser, sweeter beans with fewer harsh rubbery notes. Uganda is also the genetic birthplace of robusta, and its cultivars descend from indigenous wild coffee. In May 2025 Uganda became Africa's largest coffee exporter on the strength of this robusta.

What is your minimum order for robusta coffee beans?

We supply from single 60kg jute bags (air freight or LCL sea consolidation) up to full 19.2 tonne containers. Most first-time buyers start with a free 500g sample, then a 5 to 20 bag trial order before committing to container volume.

Do you supply washed robusta for specialty use?

Yes. Our washed robusta micro-lots are fully washed, dried on raised beds and hand-sorted. They cup clean and sweet, suitable for fine robusta programs and 100 percent robusta espresso offerings.

How long does shipping take from Uganda?

Cargo exits through Mombasa. Typical transit: 12 days to Jeddah, 18 to 25 days to European ports, 30 to 38 days to US East Coast ports. Full documentation is prepared before vessel departure so customs clearance is not delayed.
