Why Does Italy Import So Much Coffee From Uganda?

Italy imported 54.7 million kg of Ugandan coffee in the 12 months to November 2025, making it Uganda's single largest coffee buyer. The relationship is not new — it is built on decades of proven quality, reliable supply, and beans purpose-grown for Italian roasting.

01

Built for Espresso Blending

Ugandan Robusta (Screen 18/15) adds body, crema, and caffeine depth to Italian espresso blends. Our washed Arabica (Bugisu AA, Screen 18) balances brightness without overpowering. Together they produce the classic Italian profile: rich crema, full mouthfeel, clean finish.

02

Trieste Logistics Corridor

Coffee ships from Mombasa to Trieste in 3-4 weeks via established Mediterranean routes. Trieste is Italy's historic coffee port with dedicated green bean warehousing, sampling labs, and a network of roasters within 500km. This corridor has moved Ugandan coffee for over 50 years.

03

UCDA Consistency Guarantee

Every export lot is graded and certified by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority before shipment. Italian roasters receive consistent screen size, moisture content, and defect counts shipment after shipment. No surprises at the cupping table.

Which Ugandan Coffee Grades Work Best for Italian Roasting?

Italian roasters blend for consistency, crema, and shell life. The following grades have proven themselves in Italian cups for decades:

Bugisu AA (Washed Arabica)

Screen 17/18, fully washed, from Mount Elgon at 1,600-1,900m. Bright acidity with chocolate and citrus notes. Used as the premium Arabica component in Italian blends, providing the aromatic top notes that define high-end espresso. FOB ~242 USc/kg.

Robusta Screen 18

Clean cup, full body, high caffeine. The backbone of Italian espresso blends, providing the thick crema and punch that Italian consumers expect. Uganda Robusta Screen 18 trades at a premium to Vietnam Robusta due to cleaner processing and lower defect counts.

Screen 15 (Value Blending)

Smaller screen size but consistent quality. An economical Robusta component for commercial blends where volume and cost matter. UCDA-graded to ensure consistent cup profile across containers.
